Which Rubbers Can Be Bonded?
Table 1 illustrates the ease of bonding of different rubbers, from the easiest to the most difficult to bond.
Table 1: Ease of rubber bonding.
|Easiest To Bond||Nitrile Rubber (NBR)|
|Chloroprene Rubber (CR)|
|Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR)|
|Natural Rubber (NR) / Isoprene Rubber (IR)|
|Most Difficult To Bond||Polybutadiene Rubber (BR)|
|Ethylene Propylene Diene Rubber (EPDM)|
|Butyl Rubber (IIR)|
Due to their low surface energy and chemical inertness EPDM and Silicone rubber can be incredibly challenging to bond. The adhesive selection is critical in these applications to ensure good bonding of these materials.
